- Max Burkholder is best known, at least in our household, as Max Braverman on Parenthood, the autistic child. We saw him as we were walking on the sidewalk into the Silver Lake Trader Joe’s on a Sunday morning. He was across the street on the Gelson’s sidewalk. The hair is the giveaway.
- Ed Helms was seen at a neighborhood event. This sighting was nice because one of my prized college possessions is a photo I took with him when he was covering the 2004 Presidential Debate at WUSTL for The Daily Show and I was on location as an intern doing something dumb for some network. Now we were both at a family event 20 years later, as good looking as ever.
- Rachel Bloom was also seen at a neighborhood event. Rachel is one of Jessica’s favorite tv comediennes, and I confirm Crazy Ex-girlfriend is above average.
- Nathan Fielder makes some of my favorite comedy series. Nathan for You is in my Hall of Fame next to 30 Rock, Arrested Development, and Seinfeld. I saw him at the local park I work out at every Saturday morning and new right away it was him, no help needed from Jessica (though she saw him at the same time). NfY includes a lot of businesses from our part of East Hollywood, Atwater, and Glendale, so I was not totally surprised to see him around. I just wish he would swing by the park more often on Saturday mornings ;(.
- Jon Voight was spotted at the Westfield Century City Mall, which is spiritually the Westfield Beverly Hills Mall. I saw a tall distinguished looking guy with a Macbook tucked to his chest walking purposefully. I did think he looked familiar, realized it was not Christopher Walken, and then told myself it was just a tall old guy. A few minutes later Jessica said she thinks we saw someone famous and she was talking about the same man. She said Voight and is great with faces, and I just confirmed on Wikipedia that Voight is 6’2″. Must’ve been him.
- Rob Corddry has had a much less prominent career than I realized, which shows you just how much of an impression he made on me as a Daily Show correspondent from 2002-2006. (He has also had guest appearances on Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm.) I saw him at Levant, a gluten free Middle Eastern restaurant in Echo Park, with my wife and our friend. There were two rows of booths back to back, and I was at one end of my booth’s table and he was at the end of his. I did not notice him until leaving and even then it took me a second because he was wearing glasses and has a slightly fuller frame and face – not fat – than I remembered. What actually gave it away was that he returned my first look and also my second when I had a feeling he looked familiar. Celebrities can tell when someone is looking at them and often hold eye contact for half a second longer than you would if two unfamous people made eye contact.
- Marisa Thayer is a short very red redhead, which is all I thought when I saw this person at our Whole Foods 365. My wife felt that itch, and a few minutes later pegged her as Kenneth’s blind blind date in the St. Valentine’s Day episode (clip). She’s had a lot of other small roles too, including alongside Jack McBrayer (Kenneth) in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
- Seth Rogen is so well known that I almost did not provide a link. My wife saw him on a weekday in Los Feliz, which seems to be the Eastside A-listers preferred neighborhood. He was technically filming something in front the of the Los Feliz 3 movie theatre, but it was with a minimal crew, minimal enough that she was able to walk by and say hi.
